A popular permaculture project, the herb spiral gives a lot of growing area in a small space. Locating it near the kitchen door ensures that it will get used.

The spiral formation provides a variety of microclimates: hot and dry at the top for rosemary, shady on the north side, and wetter on the bottom layer.

We found some old bricks on the property that provided ideal material for our spiral.

Sheet mulching with cardboard suppresses the grass. Small branches, leaves, kitchen scraps and manure will break down into soil over time. Meanwhile, we can use a bit of soil to get some herbs growing and speed the soil-making process.
